Well, today marks the end of eating social theories and accomodating more schema to my congested brain. SW2104 CA is over! and upcoming Anatomy CA2. I did terribly for the previous CA. Well, a great 20% below the norm. :S I better buck up this CA!
Anyway, on my way home on bus 198 at 6pm this evening, the common scene during Singaporean peak hour happened. The 'bus-very-pack-but-people-refuse-to-move-in' situation.
*rolls eyes*
it was just this bunch of english-speaking, rather educated ladies in their say, middle adulthood? (i.e. 40s) they were
rearest if i could say that, standing on the bus, and a considerable distance away from the true end of the bus. and so they took up a lot of space, going on their conversation. and there were seats in front of them. which they did not sit on.
Oh wells, my sympathy for those sardine-packed passengers who desperately squeezed up at the front, and even more so for those who didn't manage to be a sardine at all.
What's there to blog about such common happenings in our urban jungle? lame ah?
no lah.
come to think of it. its super normal. yes, ONLY IN SINGAPORE.
which makes me think that we are WEIRD. in a very negative sense. its the bang-my-head on the wall kindda reaction to these people. WHATS YOUR PROBLEM MAN? will be the ah beng's reaction to them. and for the rarest of times, i agree with ah bengs.
my friend whose dad lived in a certain western country recounted this to me before:
Her dad was stuck in the middle of a narrow junction overseas. the reason was there was an oncoming car and both did not want to move first. as in, both drivers (her dad and the other driver) wanted to let the other party pass first. and they were so sincere.. it dragged on for a considerably long time.
so if another human being could give up time to just let another person go first, why can't Singaporeans just make 3 modest steps to the rear of the bus to allow 5 more sardines to get home, cook and take care of their children earlier?
This phenomenon is the refusal of the middle adults to bother about the other people. cos, despite the frequent staring at eye contacts I and other annoyed sardines made with them, they didn't move. I was on the verge of asking them to do it verbally, but I didn't. And a fellow NUS guy beside me was really do the same thing as I was. haha, and after I got a seat, I found one of the ladies really irritated and glaring at my fellow schoolmate. Cos i think he tried to hint her by nudging her in a little bit. or maybe the bus was just too unstable. who knows. but she was so annoyed! like, hello, we are not even that annoyed with you can.
haiyo, this kind of people ah!
anyway, these people litter the streets of singapore. and they look just like you and me. just that somewhere they have gone wrong in the development of these individuals that causes such egocentrism, or self-absorption, according to E.Erikson's psychosocial theory.
Being unable to be successful in one's own field/ terms causing the individual to be self-absorbed in their personal lives. Choosing deliberately to ignore the predicament of others and eventually being numb.
From open kampong huts to alarm systems in HDB units. From being able to take a botle of soya sauce from ur neighbour's kitchen when you need it to not knowing who actually lives beside you. It is clear that our society is ailing. Not just locally, but globally. But why has Singapore been such a prime site for the acceleration of such degradation? Being Asian is no excuse of being less hospitable. China people love guests for all I know. Kampong are exclusive to Asians, you don't see angmoh kampongs in Europe rite.
One might only guess that we are more driven by the needs of the government, whatever is the need of our country that we enter into certain fields of occupation and never really thought what really satisfies the true us. Except some, who feel money is the most important and so whatever GARMENT says, got money so DO IT!
I can't help but fantasize about a Singapore where people are truly passionate and excellent about their occupation. And maybe we have less grumpy, more caring people. And those courtesy campaigns with smiley lions really only work in primary schools. Where children are relatively happier and impressionable.
Well, we are all
noble savages endowed with a sense of right or wrong by our society.
